Emma Mears Textiles was set up in May 2017 by Emma Mears and is based in County Durham. My work is mostly inspired by the flora and fauna around County Durham where I live and the North East Coastline.
My work is made up of textiles and materials that I have bought, worn or acquired in some way. I use a mixture of new, old, vintage and antique fabrics and I love to rummage in charity shops for old clothes, tablecloths, handkerchiefs, blankets, etc, to cut up and re-use. Sometimes I use papers and printing in my work too, (mixed media).
My work is quirky, colourful and textural, often stylised in design.
I create landscapes and seascapes, but also individual scenes of flowers and still life. I enjoy exploring a range of techniques such as; hand embroidery, hand and machine applique, collage and layering to create texture and a quilted affect. Also, free machine embroidery to create texture, define areas and to create interesting and raised surfaces and patterns.
I also make wearable art such as brooches and pendants and other accessories such as lampshades and small lanterns for the home. I also sell a range of prints and cards, coasters and other smaller items.
