Driftwood sculpture is fundamentally different from any other forms of sculpture, since the artist serves as a translator between the raw ‘material’ and the audience. I challenge the standard definition of artistic creation, since my sculptures are created through subtraction as opposed to addition. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture as it reaches the shoreline, but my work job as a creator is to carve away the parts that do not belong to the story, whilst saving the parts that are essential for uncovering what each of these pieces have got to tell my audience. Therefore, I see this work as a creative challenge or a gamble. Driftwood is about more than just a pure aesthetic appreciation – it’s about keeping a relationship with nature and sea at the centre of my artistic experience and turning it into contemporary sculpture that lies somewhere on the threshold between the man-made and unmade.
