I am a Fine Artist focussed on progressing my practice.
My work so far has largely centred on experimenting with contemporary portraiture, using oils, acrylics and pastels.
Whilst I also enjoy painting ‘still life’ and ‘landscapes’, my work so far has largely focussed on the human face and figure and how this can be represented in paint. Painting largely family and friends from iphone portraits and selfies, I try to capture something of the essence of the person and convey that emotion via the handling of the paint and colour. In dealing with a traditional subject and in the light of the ongoing craze of the ‘Selfie’ ( From Selfie to Self - Expression, Saatchi Gallery,London, May 2017) there is also the issue of ‘making’ - a concern with exploring painting mediums to make the paintings relevant and contemporary.
Like Matisse, Hockney and Joffe, the use of colour is what gives my work its structure and I am becoming more aware of the ‘spatio- temporal’ complexities of the paint and how this keeps the viewer engaged. I work mainly in acrylics, oils, pastels and charcoal and latterly some experimentation with watercolours and more fluid acrylics in an attempt to concern myself more with what the paint does to the image. My work at present could be described as more figurative and representational with some abstraction in parts.
